Portland police fatally shoot a man

A man has died in southeast Portland after a police shooting Monday, Portland Police Bureau officials said.

Police officials have released few other details.

The shooting occurred around 6:30 p.m. in the Hazelwood neighborhood after an unknown man shot at officers and they returned fire, killing the man. The police found a gun next to the man’s body, said Mike Benner, spokesman for the police headquarters, at a press conference at 10:15 p.m. near the crime scene.

Investigators from the office’s Major Crimes Team and members of the SWAT team were serving a search warrant in the 100 block of Southeast 124th Avenue when the events occurred.

“There was an encounter between an adult man and officers,” the police wrote in an initial press release. “The encounter resulted in an officer-involved shooting. The adult male died. No officers were injured.”

Police Chief Bob Day visited the scene shortly after the shooting and told the assembled reporters that he would release as much information about the murder as he could as quickly as possible. He said police shootings are “always a tragedy” and also a reminder of the risks officers take while doing their jobs. “We are fortunate that our officers are returning home safely to their families,” he said.
