Olympic Games Paris: Nigerian boxer Cynthia Ogunsemilore provisionally suspended for doping

Paris, July 28 (IANS) Nigerian boxer Cynthia Temitayo Ogunsemilore has been provisionally suspended for violating anti-doping rules ahead of her opening bout at the Paris Olympic Games, the International Testing Agency (ITA) said.

After the Iraqi judoka Sajjad Sehen and the Dominican volleyball player Lisvel Eve Mejia, this is the third doping case since the start of the Olympic Games.

“A sample collected from boxer Cynthia Temitayo Ogunsemilore returned a negative analytical result for a specific prohibited substance, furosemide (classified as a diuretic and masking agent of category S5 according to the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Prohibited List),” the ITA wrote.

The 22-year-old Ogunsemilore was scheduled to make her Olympic debut on Monday in the 60 kg weight class.

Ogunsemilore was informed of the case and provisionally suspended pending the resolution of the matter in accordance with the World Anti-Doping Code and the IOC Anti-Doping Rules applicable to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

This means that the boxer will not be allowed to compete, train, coach or participate in any other activities during the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

The sample was collected by the ITA under the testing authority and results management of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) during an out-of-competition anti-doping test in Paris on July 25.

The result was announced on July 27 by the WADA-accredited laboratory in Paris.

Cynthia has the right to appeal the provisional suspension before the Court of Arbitration for Sport – Anti-Doping Division (CAS ADD). She also has the right to request the analysis of the B sample.
