Who killed Roy Kelly III?

11 years ago this month, Roy Kelly III was murdered. His father was on his way to work as a cook at Tom’s Oyster Bar when he was shot in northwest Detroit.

Since then, his family has been searching for his murderer.

“This is something I will never give up; I don’t care how old I get or what happens in my life. I will always do this so you guys know I will never forget what you did,” Kelly’s sister Jennifer Mitchell said of her brother’s shooter. He was just days away from his 30th birthday when he was killed.

“A few blocks away, someone asked him for a ride and shot him in the side,” Mitchell says.

This happened in 2013 at 9 a.m. The case remains unsolved to this day, although the victim’s sister testified that a young woman witnessed the crime.

Over the years, Kelly’s family has tried to contact the shooter, asking him to come forward and take responsibility for the death of another person.

“The young man was friends with my brother before he did all this. We never actually saw him. The next morning he got up and took himself and his family away,” Mitchell says.

Even though so much time has passed, the family is convinced that some form of justice could be very helpful.

“My brother has a son and our family would like to have closure.”
