National Buffalo Soldier Day | San Angelo LIVE!

Fort Concho will celebrate National Buffalo Soldier Day on Sunday, July 28, from 2 to 5 p.m. The day also marks the one-year anniversary of the Buffalo Soldier Memorial’s installation in the city’s historic attractions. The free program will begin at 2 p.m. at the Memorial, located across the street from Fort Concho, with a presentation by Sherley Spears, former president of the local NAACP chapter and founder of the memorial project. At 2:30 p.m., the program will move to the fort’s commissary building, 301 E Avenue C, where C. A. Maedgen of the West Texas Archaeology Society will speak at the Concho Mail Station.

Fort Concho’s Buffalo Soldier units guarded this station more than 140 years ago. The fort’s Buffalo Soldier exhibit at Barracks 1 will be open from 1 to 5 p.m. on July 28.
