A dashboard camera captured the horrific moment a man was attacked in the back of a taxi in east London by a group of men armed with knives.

Footage circulating on social media shows a group of three men getting out of a taxi in Rainham on Tuesday – only to have an argument on the street outside, with one of them jumping back into the taxi moments later.

While the young man begs the driver to flee, they are surrounded by a group of masked men who have stopped in a car behind the taxi. It seems as if they are about to launch an attack: one man smashes the right rear window of the taxi while another man opens the door on the other side.

The dashcam clip shows a tense few minutes in which the man – who appears to have suffered at least one stab wound to his arm – warns that they are being followed by the other vehicle and urges the driver to speed up to escape the vehicle.

The Metropolitan Police said on Saturday it was aware of the footage, adding that the incident was reported on June 23 when officers were called to a stabbing in Spencer Road.

A police statement said: “Officers attended the scene and found a man who had been approached and stabbed by a group of people.

“He drove himself to the hospital while calling the police and his injuries are not believed to be life-changing or threatening. The investigation is ongoing.”
