A Jackson woman who killed another man with her car has her conviction upheld

A Jackson woman who killed another woman with her car has had her conviction upheld.

In 2017, Brittany Carter intentionally hit Chornell Mayfield with her vehicle, leaving Mayfield in a coma for two years before she died in 2019. According to court documents, the Weeks Street incident was the culmination of a “contentious and…”ongoing feud” between the two women, as Carter’s sister Ashley and Mayfield had children by the same man.

In November 2022, Carter was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to 40 years in the Mississippi Department of Corrections, with 10 years suspended. This week, Carter’s attorney argued before the Mississippi Court of Appeals that insufficient evidence was presented at trial and that her client acted in self-defense. The court heard the argument but ultimately disagreed in a ruling issued Thursday.

“In this case, the jury was properly briefed on the question of self-defense, and since the jury obviously found the State’s evidence on that question to be more credible, they concluded beyond a reasonable doubt that Carter did not act in the necessary defense. ” wrote the judges. “After reviewing the file, we find that the court did not commit any error. Therefore, Carter’s conviction and sentence for second-degree murder are affirmed.”

During the trial, prosecutors also revealed that Carter was sentenced to five years in prison for possession of a stolen firearm, meaning she will serve another 32 years behind bars. You can read Thursday’s decision in full here.
