Body found at In-N-Out restaurant in Newbury Park triggers investigation

The sudden death of a man outside a fast-food restaurant in Newbury Park on Saturday morning sparked an investigation by the Criminal Investigation Department.

Based on the initial investigation, authorities believe the death was likely due to a medical emergency, said Ventura County Sheriff’s Captain Ken Truitt.

The incident occurred shortly before 5:50 a.m. at the drive-thru entrance of In-N-Out Burger at 1550 Newbury Road, Truitt said.

The death was considered suspicious, Truitt said, and the sheriff’s major crimes unit responded. The agency is contractually obligated to provide police services in Thousand Oaks, including Newbury Park.

The drive-thru area at In-N-Out Burger in Newbury Park reopened on Saturday following an investigation into a sudden death at the location.

Video surveillance from a nearby business led investigators to believe it was a medical incident, the captain said. The video shows the man running across the parking lot and suddenly collapsing.

β€œIt looks like no one else is involved,” Truitt said.

The incident occurred before the restaurant’s regular opening time of 10:30 a.m. The restaurant was open and all traces of the previous investigation had disappeared by late morning.
