Oprah Winfrey has expressed her belief that many people still suspect that she is secretly having an affair with Gayle King.

The 70-year-old television mogul has been plagued for years by unfounded rumors suggesting a romantic relationship with her best friend, despite being in a long-term relationship with businessman Stedman Graham since the 1980s. Oprah fears those rumors will never completely go away.

During her guest appearance on Melinda Gates’ YouTube series “Moments That Make Us,” Oprah said, “I think we shared pretty much everything, and I have to say, it wasn’t even a question of orientation. For years, people said we were gay, and listen, we always had to fight back. And people may still think that.”

Gayle humorously added, “I always told Oprah, ‘You need to do a show about it because it’s hard enough for me to get a date on Saturday night when people think we’re gay.’ Because if we were gay, we’d tell you!” Oprah went on to explain that she believes the rumors were sparked by the unusual sight of two women having such a close bond. She said, “One of the things I always thought was that people weren’t used to seeing women with that kind of true bond…”

The TV icon also said that the reason they have maintained such a close friendship over the years is because there has been no “jealousy” between them. She put it this way: “I think the reason our friendship has worked is because every success, victory or challenge that I overcome, Gayle is more happy for me, not just, but more happy than I am for myself.”

“And I’m just as happy as she is – I can’t be happier than Gayle, I can’t outdo her. You can’t outdo her. I’m just as happy for her… (There’s not even a) hint of jealousy about anything.” Gayle interjected: “I just assumed that everyone has a really good friend. I just assumed that every woman – maybe not for men – has at least one.'”
