“Feel the Spirit” at Head-Smashed-in Buffalo Jump in Alberta

From the Rocky Mountains to big cities, Alberta has no shortage of incredible places to travel, wander and explore, but Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump is one of the biggest.

Located south of Calgary, this incredible site is protected by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and welcomes thousands of visitors each year.

So what makes it so important?

Head-Smashed-In is more than just a secluded destination with a beautiful view.

“The significance of the Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump landscape lies in its historical, archaeological and scientific interest,” UNESCO explains.

“It is the best-preserved example of the communal hunting techniques and lifestyle of the Plains peoples based on the vast bison herds that existed in North America for more than five millennia.”

According to the Canadian Encyclopedia, research suggests that this particular buffalo jump has been in use for nearly 6,000 years, meaning there is still much to be discovered beneath the grassy base.

Would you like to visit the interpretation centre?

With 7 levels built into the sandstone cliffs and hiking trails above and below, there is plenty to learn, see and do all year round.

Head-Smashed-In will be open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Sunday until October 14, 2024, before moving to fall hours.

It’s truly one of a kind! So, go for it!

Have a nice visit and enjoy it. It is a must-see in Albeta.
