Insider Reveals Houston Astros’ Biggest Obstacle to Trading Star Talent

The Houston Astros’ one-game lead over the Seattle Mariners for the American League West title just got a lot more complicated. Seattle made two big trades in the last 24 hours, adding All-Star Randy Arozarena and reliever Yimi Garcia. But the Astros are still planning their moves.

Time is running out before the MLB trade deadline on July 30. But now we know why the Stros haven’t struck yet.

Houston Astros’ weak farm system could block trades

According to MLB insider Jon Heyman, the Houston Astros have decided to focus on acquiring the best rental pitchers available on the market. The names Heyman mentioned are Toronto’s Yusei Kikuchi and Detroit’s Jack Flaherty. Both are set to become free agents once their seasons are over.

Even with bigger names available, the Astros may not have the assets to pull off a big trade due to a weak farm system. Recently, Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter ranked all 30 farm systems after the 2024 MLB Draft, and the Astros came in at No. 26.

So it makes sense that Houston wouldn’t want to empty its cupboards in hopes of becoming one of the best teams in the American League by the playoffs. Regardless, despite their weaker prospect pool, that doesn’t stop Houston from trying to find an upgrade or two before the MLB trade deadline. But as Heyman noted, they might not be able to aim as high as they’d like.
