Man killed in shooting involving deputy sheriff in Putnam County

SATSUMA, Florida. – A man was killed in a shooting involving a deputy in Satsuma Saturday morning, according to the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office.

Officials said it all started Friday night when they received two calls involving 31-year-old Allen Baldwin.

The first call came in at 11:30 a.m. from a woman on Shell Harbor Road who called “screaming for help” and reported a car theft, officials said.

While officers were responding to that call, a second call came in at approximately 12:36 a.m. regarding a disturbance on North Second Street. Officers said the caller reported that a man was threatening others with a 9mm handgun.

Witnesses at the scene identified Baldwin as the man with the gun, officials said.

When officers found Baldwin, they attempted to approach him, but they said Baldwin made “a gesture” by reaching for the gun in his waistband and exposing it.

Officers said they began shooting at Baldwin at that point, hitting him multiple times. They added that they rushed to him immediately after the shooting and began CPR.

Baldwin was taken to HCA Putnam Hospital, where he died, officials said.

According to a press release from the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, all three deputies involved in the incident are on administrative leave per office policy.

Deputies said this incident was the first police-involved shooting in Putnam County since 2017.

The FDLE is investigating the incident. Body camera footage of the call is currently being reviewed, officials said.

There will be a press conference at the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office on Monday at 1:30 p.m. where officials are expected to speak further about this shooting.
