Man arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated and leading police on a wrong-way chase on I-90

ELYRIA, Ohio (WOIO) – Sheffield Village police arrested a 20-year-old man suspected of a hit-and-run following a chase Thursday, according to an Elyria police report.

According to the report, police arrested Geoffery George on I-90 near the 148-mile marker south of Detroit Road for failure to obey, obstruction of justice, reckless conduct and drunken driving.

At around 5:23 a.m., the report said, Elyria officers responded to a report of a hit-and-run crash near Lorain County Community College.

The suspect vehicle was described in the police report as a blue Chevrolet sedan that fled north on Abbe Road North.

Elyria Police learned that Sheffield Village Police were traveling with the suspect vehicle named in the report and observed three Sheffield Village Police patrol cars pursuing the car as it turned north onto Abbe Road North.

Elyria police said they joined the pursuit at speeds of 30 miles per hour and as the pursuit continued, they suspected George may have been driving while intoxicated.

According to police, George nearly collided with another vehicle near Gulf Road and Campagna Street.

After several more near-misses with other cars, George then took Detroit Road to get to I-90, according to the report.

According to police, he was driving in the wrong direction on the highway and almost collided head-on with a vehicle.

Both Elyria and Sheffield Village police attempted to stop the vehicle with their patrol cars and eventually brought it to a stop in a ditch, the report said.

George then ran on foot into a wooded area and was pursued by police, the report said.

An Elyria Police report said George did not comply with orders, so an Elyria Police officer used a taser on him and handcuffed him.

According to the report, two VooDoo Ranger beer cans were found on the front seat and a strong odor of alcohol was detected in the vehicle and on George.
