Newport News police seek information on murder Friday night

According to police, there is currently no information on a suspect after a man was found outside with a fatal gunshot wound late Friday evening.

NEWPORT NEWS, Virginia – Newport News police are investigating the death of a man late Friday night as a homicide.

Shortly before midnight, a gunshot detection system called Shotspotter detected a possible firearm incident in the 500 block of Settlement Lane, according to the Newport News Police Department (NNPD).

Officers went to the area and found a man outside with “at least one gunshot wound,” the NNPD said in a news release. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

As of 2 a.m., detectives and crime scene investigators were still investigating the crime scene, the NNPD said.

Police said there is no information on a suspect at this time. They are asking anyone with information about the shooting to call 911 or the NNPD’s non-emergency line at 757-247 – 2500.
