Suspected jewelry thief arrested after returning to crime scene in Ukiah

The following is a press release from the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office. The information has not been proven in court and all persons described should be presumed innocent until proven guilty:

On 07/25/2024, at approximately 10:44 a.m., officers with the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office were called to a burglary in progress in the 2800 block of South State Street in Ukiah.

Upon arrival, officers discovered an open door and evidence that someone had entered the home. Using the MCSO K-9 JET, they searched the home but were unable to locate anyone inside. After preliminary investigation, officers learned that the person who was inside the home had left shortly before their arrival.

Mendocino County Sheriff’s officers completed their investigation and began searching the area. A short time later, officers were notified that the suspect had returned and was inside the home. Officers returned and quickly arrested Sydney Shackman inside the home.

A search of Shackman’s personal belongings was conducted, which revealed that she was in possession of several pieces of jewelry belonging to the homeowner. The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office dispatch center informed officers that Shackman was on probation and required to “obey all laws.”

Shackman was arrested for 1203.2 PC (Probation Violation) and 459/460(A) PC (Burglary). Shackman was subsequently booked into the Mendocino County Jail where she was to be held on $50,000.00 bail.
