Fox that may have attacked three central Pennsylvania residents tests positive for rabies

SELINSGROVE – The fox that is believed to have bitten three Snyder County residents this week was rabid, the state game commission said.

The remains of the fox were examined after it was killed by a police officer on Thursday in the Harris Estates area of Penn Twp., just outside Selinsgrove.

Travis Lau, spokesman for the Game Commission, said on Friday he had no further new information on the investigation.

An adult male and a couple were bitten in separate incidents on Wednesday. All victims are being treated for rabies, Lau told the commission.

The female suffered bites on both feet while her husband tried to lure the fox away from her, he said. The male was not interviewed, so the location of his bites is unknown, he said.

The fox was not found on Wednesday as it spent most of its time in the surrounding woods and fields, so residents have been advised to limit unnecessary outdoor activities and report any sightings.

State police responded to a sighting on Thursday, killed the fox and turned the carcass over to the Game Commission for examination.

Lau said at the time that there was no reason to believe that more than one fox was involved in these incidents.
