Speed ​​camera goes into operation at notorious accident hotspot in North Ayrshire

A new speed camera is to be put into operation at a notorious accident site in order to reduce the number of accidents.

A stationary camera will be commissioned on Stoneyholm Road in Kilbirnie, North Ayrshire next week due to a “concerning” number of collisions due to speeding.

The road was highlighted due to eight accidents in which people were injured within four years.

Speed ​​measurements showed that almost half of all traffic on the road was traveling faster than 30 miles per hour.

In recent years numerous concerns have been raised by the local community regarding speeding on the road to North Ayrshire Council and Police Scotland.

North Ayrshire Council introduced additional road signage and road markings, but this did not improve the situation.

Alan Bowater, West Safety Camera Manager, said: “Motorists should be reminded that wherever they see one of our cameras there will be a warning that speed-related collisions have occurred in the area in the past.”

“People have been seriously injured or killed by speeding. Driving can be unpredictable, but you can choose to reduce your speed and make the roads safer for everyone.

A spokesperson for North Ayrshire Council added: “North Ayrshire Council supports the installation of a fixed speed camera on Stoneyholm Road in Kilbirnie.

“The installation will play a key role in improving road safety and creating a safer environment for the benefit of the local community.”
