Celebrate National Buffalo Wing Day at These New Bedford Restaurants

NEW BEDFORD — July 29 is National Buffalo Wing Day! Several area restaurants pride themselves on serving the best chicken wings.

At Pour Farm, the kitchen takes fresh (not frozen) wings and dry rubs them with their house sauce, then smokes them with apple wood and fries them to order.

“We often hear people talk about the best wings around, and we want people to come and try our wings,” said co-owner Jen McHugh.

“They are delicious, salty, smoky and crispy, and we think they are the best wings on the market.”

The “Spicy” History of Buffalo Wings

The history of the Buffalo chicken wing dates back to the Anchor Bar in Buffalo, New York in 1964. Credit for the invention of the Buffalo chicken wing, also known as the chicken wing, goes to Teressa Bellissimo, who owned the bar with her husband Frank.

The story goes that one night, their son and some friends came to the bar late at night looking for something to eat. Teressa looked in the refrigerator and found some leftover chicken wings, which she usually used to make soup stock. Instead, she decided to fry them and toss them in a hot sauce made with Frank’s RedHot sauce and butter. The Buffalo wing was first served as a late-night snack and was an instant hit with customers.

Buffalo wings skyrocketed in popularity in 1990, when McDonald’s introduced them to its menu for a limited time. It is estimated that Americans consume more than 10 billion chicken wings on Super Bowl Sunday.

The largest serving of chicken wings ever recorded took place at the Wells Wing Fest in Wells, Maine in 2013, weighing in at 4,510 pounds.

Here are some places in the city where you can try Buffalo chicken wings:

Located at 972 Kempton St., Wings Over is a chicken wing chain founded in Amherst, Massachusetts in 1999. In 2018, Wings Over underwent a rebranding and as of April 2023, the chain had 33 locations, primarily in the Northeast and Midwest.

At the New Bedford restaurant, there is a wide selection of flavors available, ranging from mild to spicy, such as fire, golden barbecue and honey barbecue. There are also traditional options like teriyaki and honey mustard, as well as unique flavors like hot garlic, hot lemon pepper and mango habanero.

For a touch of sweetness, try the sweet chili or sweet Korean fire. In addition to these options, there are also spicy flavors in honey, Cajun, palm garlic, and lemon pepper, as well as a classic plain option.

You can order six, eight or ten wings, or choose a combination of two flavors and two dips, with 14 to 24 groups of four. If you’re really hungry, you can also opt for wings by the piece, with up to 100 wings available in your favorite flavors.

The pub-style restaurant on Front Street is owned by a group of five who also own restaurants such as Cork and Carmine’s. The pub offers a selection of premium beers on tap and serves lunch and dinner. For those looking for wings, the menu includes half a dozen chicken wings with a choice of 11 different sauces, ranging from mild to spicy.

Sauces include Buffalo, Buffique (Buffalo and Mozambique sauce), Nashville Hot, Honey Barbecue and Sweet Chili. Customers also have the option to add sweet potato fries, onion rings, fried pickles or fried or puffed potato chips to their order.

Endzone Restaurant and Bar, located at 218 Coggeshall St, has been family owned since its founding in 1994. Their take on the Buffalo wing features chicken tenders sautéed in traditional Buffalo, Buffalo/Mozambique, Gold Rush or Fire & Ice Dry Rub sauces, and served with crispy celery.

The sports bar, located at 85 MacArthur Drive, was established in 2004 and takes its name from a circle of friends nicknamed the “knuckleheads.” Co-owned by John Stone and Paul Souza, the bar was created with the goal of providing a casual and enjoyable atmosphere for patrons. The menu features delicious chicken wings, which can be dressed with BBQ, Buffalo, Asian, Gold Fever or Cajun sauces.

Bobby Afonso has owned Top Shelf Bar and Grill for nearly 13 years, located at 1825 Acushnet Ave. Customers can choose from bone-in or boneless chicken wings or strips, accompanied by their favorite sauce, including Buffalo, barbecue, honey mustard or chipotle barbecue.
