Man dies after two-vehicle crash in Union County

UNION COUNTY, SD (KELO) — One man died and another was injured in a two-vehicle crash at 1:47 p.m. Friday on I-29 in North Sioux City, SD.

According to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety, a 69-year-old driver of a Ford Escape was traveling north on I-29 when he drove slowly through heavy traffic and entered a construction zone.


A 57-year-old driver of a Lexus Rx350 was traveling north on I-29 at highway speeds when he collided with the rear of the Escape, causing it to veer into the center lane and overturn.

The Lexus entered a southbound lane and collided with a fence in the western ditch, where it came to a stop.

Both drivers were taken to a hospital in Sioux City. The driver of the Escape died of his injuries. He was wearing a seatbelt.

The driver of the Lexus suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries. He was not wearing a seatbelt.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.

The name of the man killed has not been released pending notification of family members.
