Woman charged with abandoning baby in southwest Houston

Everilda Cux-Ajtzalam, 18, is accused of leaving the child near a dumpster along Dashwood Drive in southwest Houston last weekend.

HOUSTON — An 18-year-old woman faces a felony charge after authorities say she abandoned her newborn son in a dumpster behind an apartment complex last weekend.

Everilda Cux-Ajtzalam is accused of abandoning a child without intent to return it and faced a judge for the first time on Friday.

The discovery was made Sunday when witnesses heard a baby crying and called 911.

When officers arrived, they found the newborn in a sealed plastic bag near a dumpster along Dashwood Drive in southwest Houston.

Authorities said the child was born the same day he was found.

They also said that Cux-Ajtzalam told them that she had left him and gone home with no intention of coming back for him.

“It was by pure luck that the child was found and received treatment,” the magistrate judge said during the appearance.

During his court appearance, a magistrate judge said Cux-Ajtzalam had lived in Houston for more than two years.

Her bail was set at $90,000 and authorities also said she was being held in pretrial detention.

The little boy was still in hospital on Friday.
