Man allegedly killed mother in argument over money

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A 33-year-old man is in custody accused of killing his own mother after he told police she attacked him with a wooden stick and he pulled out his gun in self-defense.

Rhakeem Fields is accused of manslaughter for shooting his mother Katrina Fields-Michael during an argument over money.

According to police, Fields confessed to shooting his mother three times on Wednesday at their home in the 2700 block of Hickory Villas Drive.

Fields told investigators that he and his mother had argued over the funds from his supplemental income tax and that, according to him, she had refused to give them to him.

We spoke to Fued Eedaha, the manager of a local supermarket, who fondly remembers Katrina Fields-Michael.

“Yes, she was a very nice lady. She respected us,” she said. “She always came here to shop.”

Those who knew Fields-Michael personally are devastated by her death. Former coworkers and neighbors gathered at the laundromat where she worked, sharing fond memories and photos of happy times together.

Rhakeem Fields is currently being held in the Shelby County Jail without bail.
