Man accused of serial rapist has been arrested five times for sexual assault since 1973

JACKSONVILLE, Florida. – A 68-year-old man was arrested nearly 20 years after DNA analysis linked him to numerous sexual assaults.

Calvin Dumas was accused of being a serial rapist and was charged with sexual assault, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

Using DNA evidence, investigators were able to link Dumas to rape cases in 1995, 1996 and 1998.

Dumas’ arrest report, obtained by News4JAX, contains details of the alleged sexual assault case from 1998.

The victim said he entered her home by removing a window from the back door. She told police she was held at knifepoint and forced into a bedroom where her two children were sleeping.

The report states that Dumas threatened the woman and told her he would kill her if she made any noise.

He then abused the woman in her bed, the report says.

Before leaving the woman’s house, he also took her cell phone, the report said.

In February 2016, the woman’s sex offender kit was analyzed and linked to DNA from two other reported cases of armed sexual abuse.

The report states that the DNA was evaluated as part of a family search in January 2024. In May, Dumas was classified as a potential “first-degree relative” of the collected DNA profile and was identified as a qualified offender.

The identified relatives whose DNA could have matched were Dumas Jr. and his brother. However, they would have been 9 and 11 years old at the time of the attack and were therefore excluded.

Dumas’ swabs were taken in June and matched DNA found in all three reported sexual assault cases.

Dumas was arrested in 1973 for raping his neighbor, but was released in 1981, the JSO said.

It was also mentioned that he was arrested in 1982 for sexual abuse and robbery when he forced a woman behind a church.

In 1989, he was arrested for armed robbery, attempted sexual assault and aggravated assault after a woman woke up to find Dumas in her apartment. She said he demanded money, threatened her with a knife and raped her.

In 1995, he was arrested again for sexual assault and false imprisonment after raping another woman at knifepoint.

Officials said they would continue to try to match Dumas’ DNA to other sexual assault cases.

The JSO is now asking women who have not previously reported sexual assaults that fit Dumas’ criminal pattern, or who may know anything about Dumas’ attacks, to come forward.
