Drivers in Harnett County outraged by persistent stone throwing at moving cars

Motorists in Harnett County expressed frustration and concern Friday night over a series of incidents in which someone allegedly threw objects at moving cars, damaging windshields.

Investigators say this is an ongoing problem as vandals throw rocks at cars along Highway 210 south of Lillington.

Although no injuries have been reported, drivers are frightened and fed up with the damage to their vehicles.

Jason Wangelin, who travels a lot with his towing service, described an incident that happened to him last week while driving toward Lillington.

“The towing business is dangerous in its own way, but I have never seen anything on this scale,” Wangelin said.

He was referring to the horrific moment last Thursday when a rock shattered his windshield as he drove along Highway 210 toward Lillington.

“At first I thought we had been shot. There was just a loud explosion and pieces of glass flying everywhere,” Wangelin said.

Wangelin and other commuters believe vandals are responsible for throwing objects at them. Another driver shared dashcam footage showing a sharp object narrowly missing the windshield.

“We have certainly seen many victims of this type,” said Wade Hood of Revamp Auto Glass.

Wade and Lisa Hood, who repair auto glass for a living, shared photos of the damage to other cars.

“There have been a significant number of incidents in this area over the past year,” Wade said.

The Harnett County Sheriff’s Office told WRAL News it has received three reports of rock throwing along Highway 210 this year, compared to more than 20 last year.

Investigators describe this as a “very serious and dangerous crime” and are focusing on identifying those responsible.

With no arrests or descriptions of the suspect vehicles available, it is now time for the drivers involved to spread the word and urge others to be vigilant.
