Houston Astros looking to secure deal for top pitcher in MLB trade block

Like most other teams this time of year, the Houston Astros are busy making calls ahead of the MLB trade deadline on July 30. Unlike many others who have fallen off the rails, the Astros are looking to acquire pieces that can improve their roster. One particular area of need is in the pitching staff.

While the Astros have yet to reach an agreement, the good news is that Houston general manager Dana Brown is actively involved in trade discussions involving several starting pitchers. That includes one of the top arms on the trade market.

With limited time left before the trade deadline, the Houston Astros will have to act quickly. However, they have already started their work.

According to MLB Network insider Jon Morosi, the Astros have discussed a trade with the Detroit Tigers for right-handed starting pitcher Jack Flaherty, who is in the midst of one of his best seasons as a professional.

Flaherty, 28, will be a free agent at the end of the year, so it’s almost certain that he’ll be traded by Detroit. The only question is whether another team can beat Houston. If so, they have another contingency plan.

Morosi added that Chicago White Sox starting pitcher Erick Fedde, another right-hander, is another pitcher the Astros are considering trading in the coming days. Fedde is having the best season of his career and is under contract for one more season before becoming a free agent in 2026.

Like Flaherty, Fedde is a player who has every chance of being traded. Perhaps even more so because the White Sox are far from contending this season. At 31, the White Sox would be wise to capitalize on the trade value now before risking a tough season next year before he becomes a free agent, and Houston could present the perfect opportunity to maximize his assets.
