ROCK HILL, SC (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Neighbors in Rock Hill are mourning the loss of 15-year-old Marlie Sullivan, who died Thursday night while riding a golf cart that was struck by a car.

Rock Hill police say they are focusing on a very specific part of their investigation. Investigators say the driver of a Honda was driving in the wrong lane on Laurel Creek Drive. when the car collided with the golf cart.

Rebecca Howe had no idea she would encounter a ton of debris while walking her dog in her Laurel Creek neighborhood Friday afternoon.

“Horrible, heartbreaking, horrific,” Howe said.

Investigators are still trying to piece together the horrific accident that killed Sullivan, a student at Rock Hill High School who would have been a sophomore when school started next month.

“For her parents, her family and her neighborhood, just the thought that something like this could happen here is horrible, horrible,” Howe said.

Rebecca Howe sends her condolences to the family of Marlie Sullivan.

According to police, six people, including Sullivan, were in a golf cart shortly after 10 p.m. Thursday evening.

Just at the bend in the road, a car crossed into the wrong lane, hit the golf cart and overturned. Sullivan died on impact.

“When you talk about the untimely death of a 15-year-old, it’s always very tragic. You know it’s summer, you have children of your own and you want the children to enjoy the summer outside,” said Lt. Michael Chavis of the Rock Hill Police Department. “Something like this is going to have a very profound impact on everyone who knew this young woman.”

Three other golf cart drivers were taken to the hospital. Police say their injuries are not life-threatening.

Sullivan’s death weighs heavily on the neighborhood.

“Deep sadness, the impact on their friends, family and other students,” Howe said. “We will be praying for them to find comfort during this difficult time.”

According to police, the driver of the Honda remained at the scene and it is too early in the investigation to file charges.
