Consumers in the valley must be on guard against fraudulent repairs after storms

PHOENIX — First come the storms, then comes the storm repairs. But consumers need to be aware of who is at their door because not everyone wants to help them.

Here are some tips Arizona residents can follow to avoid home repair scams during monsoon season:

  • If you haven’t called or scheduled an appointment with a contractor, don’t hold the door open for someone you don’t know.
  • Don’t feel pressured or urged to use the services of a door-to-door salesperson.
  • Check with the Arizona Registrar of Contractors to make sure the contractor you want to work with is licensed.
  • Request a list of references from the company or contractor.
  • Compare prices to get multiple estimates.
  • Request a written, detailed contract with all costs involved.
  • Never pay the entire cost up front! Pay in installments based on the stage of completion of the project.

If you believe you have fallen victim to a home repair scammer or other fraudster, contact the Arizona Attorney General’s office or the Registrar of Contractors.
