KINGSTON, N.Y. — The roller coaster 2024 season continued for former Kingston High School baseball star Zack Short as he was designated for assignment by the Atlanta Braves on Friday, July 26.

Short’s spot on the roster will go to Braves third baseman Austin Riley, who was reinstated from the paternity list.

Short played in 30 games for the Braves this season, batting .148 with three doubles and five RBIs.

In his last appearance with the Braves, Short went 1 for 3 with a double and a run scored in Atlanta’s 9-3 loss to Cincinnati on Wednesday at Truist Park in Atlanta. He started at second base.

Short will now be placed on waivers and could join his fourth team of 2024.

Short was claimed off waivers by the New York Mets last November when the Detroit Tigers removed him from the roster after the 2023 season.

Short made the Mets’ opening day roster after a strong spring, but he played sparingly once the season began. He went 1 for 9, appearing in 10 games.

Short was acquired by the Boston Red Sox in late April after the Mets designated the versatile infielder for assignment. He went 0-for-7 in two games.

The Red Sox sent Short to Atlanta in exchange for cash in May.

Short spent three seasons with the Tigers from 2021-23. His best season was his last with Detroit as he played in 112 games in 2023. In 221 plate appearances, he posted a .204 batting average with seven home runs and 33 RBIs.

In his four years in the major leagues with four teams, Short has a .167 batting average with 13 home runs and 60 RBIs.

Short was selected in the 17th round of the 2016 draft by the Chicago Cubs. He played in the Cubs’ minor league organization for four seasons before moving to their Triple-A affiliate, the Iowa Cubs, in 2019.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, no minor league baseball was played in 2020. On August 31 of that year, Short was traded to the Tigers for outfielder Cameron Maybin.

Short was called up to the Tigers for the first time in 2021. He split the season between the Tigers and their minor league affiliate, the Toledo Mud Hens. In 61 games with the Tigers that year, he hit .141 with six home runs and 20 RBIs.

Short played just six games for the Tigers in 2022, but had his most productive year with Detroit in 2023 before being placed on waivers at the end of the season.
