Man killed by police had previously attacked his mother, according to court documents

A 22-year-old man who was shot and killed last weekend by Virginia Beach police officers responding to a stabbing in a domestic setting had previously attacked his mother with scissors, according to court documents.

Virginia Beach police were called to a home in the 4100 block of White Beam Court on July 20 for a report of a stabbing. When officers arrived, they were confronted by Marques Hasbrouck, who was armed with a 20-inch crowbar and a 27-inch metal bar, a news release said.

After Hasbrouck refused to drop the weapons, a stun gun was used, but it did not work. Hasbrouck charged toward officers as several of them shot at him, police said. Inside, officers found his mother, Victoria Hasbrouck, dead and two other relatives seriously injured.

According to an affidavit filed in Virginia Beach Juvenile and Family Court, police were at the family’s home in November 2017 because of an assault. The document said Hasbrouck, then 16, and his mother had an argument because he was playing video games and not taking his medication.

Hasbrouck pushed his mother and cursed at her, the affidavit states. When he tried to get some fast food from the table, she told him he couldn’t have any because of how he spoke to her, the document states.

“Marques grabbed a pair of scissors and attacked his mother,” the affidavit states. “He stabbed her multiple times in the face, head and body. He stated he had ‘murderous intent’ and specifically targeted her eyes because ‘they are soft.'”

The document further states that while Hasbrouck was attacking his mother, he heard voices in his head urging him to continue the attack and that he was receiving treatment for a mental illness.
