“Dead City” teaser shows the return of Lucille

There will be some new life in season 2 of The Walking Dead: Dead Citywas announced today during the series’ panel at Comic-Con in San Diego. Four actors will star in the spinoff, which returns to AMC and AMC+ in 2025. A new teaser was also released showing Lauren Cohan’s Maggie and Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s Negan back in action.

Keir Gilchrist of Atypical will play the role of Benjamin Pierce in season 2. He will be supported by Dascha Polanco (Orange is the new black) as Major Lucia Narvaez, Jack Weary (Animal Kingdom) as Christos and Pooya Mohseni as Roksana. They are all in addition to Sons of AnarchyIt had already been reported that Kim Coates would play New York crime boss Bruegel.

And while the news had already been circulating, it was also officially announced that Cohan, who serves as executive producer on the series, will direct an episode for the first time, joining a growing list of Walking dead Actors who have also directed the franchise – including Michael Cudlitz, Lennie James, Colman Domingo, Alycia Debnam-Carey, Aisha Tyler and Danay García – although Cohan made it very clear Weekly entertainment that she was not responsible for co-star Morgan accidentally eating 20 real cockroaches during a scene.

“This is the most humbling experience I’ve ever had in my life,” Cohan said from the podium. “It’s been so incredible. It started with Eli’s writing and Jeffrey’s support… I’m not crying on stage, but I’ll tell you I’m crying inside.”

But perhaps most exciting was the season two teaser that kicked off the panel, which can be viewed below. “The world was rigged,” says the voice of Dama (Lisa Emery), introduced in the season one finale. “It was designed to tear us apart. This was the world of the dead.”

And then… a very familiar whistle, Negan’s audible calling card – followed by a shot of him putting on the leather jacket and dragging Lucille across the floor. We also see Negan throwing his bat and finally Negan and Maggie coming face to face again. Whether they meet as uncertain friends or bitter enemies remains to be seen.

Who knows? When host Chris Hardwick asked showrunner Eli Jorné if there would be a change in tone in Season 2, Jorné answered without hesitation: “It’s a romantic comedy now.” (We think he’s joking.)

As for Negan’s evolution, Morgan went over the character’s history. “What I find so interesting about Negan is that when I first put on that leather jacket, for a couple of years I was exactly the Negan that got out of the RV,” the actor said. “And then a couple of years later, we started to see some changes, and I think that’s the joy for an actor, to play something that’s changing and moving. … He has to grow. He has no choice. And part of that has to do with waking up.”

Morgan Credits The Walking Dead episode “Here’s Negan” and got him thinking about what he wanted to do with the character before some giggling from the stage caused Morgan to change course. “Okay, Negan is still an asshole and he’s got his bat back. Here we go!”

After fans vociferously voiced their approval, Morgan continued, “This season is a lot about bringing back the old Negan, and that includes Lucille. I was really excited. There’s something about this sweet girl – and she is a sweet girl – that I love. It almost makes me become Negan when I hold this sweet girl. And you’ll see this season that he has a love-hate relationship with her.”
