Houston Humane Society grapples with broken air conditioners

HOUSTON – Houston residents are still struggling to recover from Hurricane Beryl, with many still dealing with property damage, FEMA claims and price gouging.

Many residents also needed help finding care for their pets after the storm, and the Houston Humane Society was able to step in and provide supplies, shelter and health care to those in need.

The animal shelter suffered water and wind damage but quickly recovered to help the community.

The shelter is now facing an unexpected expense that is affecting its support staff. The Houston Humane Society has two air conditioners down in two of its buildings.

Macy Staes of HHS said the conditions are making things difficult for their support staff.

“The humidity is about 93 percent, it feels like it’s hot… It’s just not safe,” Staes said. “We really need the community’s support to be able to continue to provide relief.”

These relief efforts include volunteers going door-to-door in the community, offering spay/neuter services, vaccinations, supply distributions, and much more.

HHS has a fundraising goal of $30,000 to cover the cost of replacing these two air conditioning units.
