What you should know about the Sinoloa cartel after the US arrested “El Mayo”

Two high-ranking figures in Mexico’s powerful Sinaloa cartel were arrested by U.S. authorities in Texas on Thursday, a major blow to the criminal gang responsible for the largest fentanyl smuggling operation into the United States.

Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada was an elusive Sinaloa drug lord who evaded capture for decades. Joaquín Guzmán López is the son of notorious drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, with whom he shares the same name, and is accused of running a network of methamphetamine labs in the northwestern Mexican state of Sinaloa. Both men were wanted by U.S. authorities on drug trafficking charges.
