Woman abused autistic boy while working at school

A school-based paedophile has been sentenced to prison for sexually abusing a boy under the age of 16. Acasia Welburn, now 26, of New Road in Telford, was sentenced to two and a half years in prison on Friday (26 July).

She pleaded guilty to three counts of a sexual act with a child by a person of trust. Welburn appeared at York Crown Court for sentencing. Welburn’s abuse occurred while she was working at a school in North Yorkshire, where she held a position of trust as a carer.

Welburn began sexual contact with an autistic teenager. She initially made contact with the boy through social media, exchanging sexual messages and images. Shocking assaults followed as she regularly met with the victim and sexually abused her in her car and home, YorkshireLive reports.

Following the verdict, Detective Constable Alison Morris, of North Yorkshire Police’s recent sexual abuse prosecution team, said: “I cannot thank the victim enough for the incredible courage and determination she has shown.”

“This is another case that shows it is possible for victims to seek and receive justice. We would encourage anyone affected by a crime to contact the police. You will be supported and listened to.”
