Rara Thomas of Georgia arrested, charged with child abuse and assault

Since the incident involved a minor, police did not want to release any further details.

The Clarke County District Court was closed Friday due to a bed bug infestation. A possible bail hearing for Thomas would take place in the jail, according to the district court clerk.

Neither his lawyer nor the University of Georgia would comment on the case.

This is not the first time Thomas has been arrested for domestic violence during his time in Georgia. In January 2023, shortly after transferring from Mississippi State University, Thomas was arrested for domestic violence and false imprisonment.

Both charges were dropped in March, and Thomas entered a diversion program. As part of his deal, he was also required to complete an anger management program and community service.

Thomas, a native of Eufaula, Alabama, played in 11 games for Georgia last season, catching 23 passes for 383 yards and three touchdowns. Thomas was not suspended following his arrest last year.

The wide receiver missed the final three games of Georgia’s 2023 season due to a foot injury. He was expected to be a key contributor for the Bulldogs next season and possibly even become a starter for the Bulldogs.

After previous incidents involving his players, Georgia coach Kirby Smart preferred not to publicly announce any penalties or suspensions.

“We don’t talk about the suspensions. We have them,” Smart said at SEC media days. “I think it’s pretty obvious that we’ve done them in the past. You know when we do them. Each of these cases is very different and they’re handled in different ways.”

Georgia will begin preseason practice next week. The Bulldogs open the season against Clemson on August 31 at noon at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
