Springfield police officers seize high-capacity firearm after traffic stop

Springfield, Mass. — On Friday, July 26, at approximately 3:55 a.m., Springfield police officers seized a loaded firearm and arrested 29-year-old Alexander Lopez in the 0-100 block of Tapley Street.

About 15 minutes earlier, officers observed a vehicle crossing the double yellow line multiple times on Tapley Street. The vehicle was also uninsured and its registration was revoked. Officers then conducted a traffic stop, identified the driver as Lopez, and informed him that the car would need to be towed.

Officers then searched the car and found an open High Noon and an illegally loaded large caliber firearm in his vehicle. Lopez also refused to take a breathalyzer test and was arrested.

The gun was loaded with nine rounds of ammunition and could fire 13 rounds. The gun was reported stolen in Vermont.

Alexander Lopez, 29, of Chicopee is accused of:

  • Possession of a large capacity firearm
  • Possession of a high capacity magazine/feeder
  • Possession of ammunition with a FID card
  • Receiving stolen property valued at less than $1,200
  • Uninsured motor vehicle
  • Driving a motor vehicle with a suspended registration
  • Possession of an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle
  • OUI – Alcohol
