Dog bite incident at Newtown Barge Park solved after owner comes forward

It was a scary situation, but it seems like everything is turning out well.

Earlier this week, we reported that numerous signs had been put up around Newtown Barge Park asking the public to be on the lookout for a specific dog and owner. The loose dog bit a child in the park, leaving a deep wound that required a visit to the emergency room. The child’s father put up the signs in hopes that the owner would come forward and help with the medical bills.

Now the child’s father tells Green dots that the situation is being resolved after the owner recently contacted him, resulting in a new series of signs alerting the public that they no longer need to be on their guard.

“The dog owner doesn’t often visit this park and is from out of town. When she saw all the dogs running loose, she let her own dog run loose as well,” the sign says. “They contacted me immediately after the signs were brought to their attention. And they returned to the area the day after the incident in hopes of finding us, but I hadn’t put up any signs yet.”

The sign said that the owner was “extremely helpful.”

He also warns neighbors not to let their dogs run off leash, which is all too common in our area and violates park rules (and often rules of human and animal decency). We’ve written about the subject many times, but as a reminder, none of our local parks allow dogs off leash except in designated dog run areas. Transmitter Park is not a dog run area.

We also recently reported on a similar dog bite incident that occurred at Paloma Coffee and Bakery (163 Nassau Ave.). While there is no news on this, Paloma recently shared an Instagram story announcing that they will be doing more to remind owners to let their dogs outside going forward.
