One dead in accident at coal processing plant

STOCKTON – One person was killed in an accident at a coal processing plant near Hazleton on Thursday.

Shortly before 10 p.m., Hazle Township firefighters were called to Stockton Mountain Road 414 for a technical rescue.

There, someone was trapped under a ton of coal in a coal processing plant.

The City of Hazleton has been asked for additional assistance in extricating the victim.

The victim, whose identity has not yet been established, succumbed to his injuries.

The fire brigade was on site for about three hours.

State police and the federal Mine Safety and Health Administration are investigating.

According to MSHA, the incident occurred at Atlantic Carbon’s Hazleton Shaft mine and was a “motor transport accident.”
