Newham Imam violently attacked in Al-Karam Mosque by ‘man who claimed he was there to pray’

An imam was “violently attacked” by a man who allegedly gained access to a mosque in east London by pretending to pray.

Security measures outside the Al-Karam Mosque in Newham have been significantly tightened and police will continue to maintain “high visibility” following the attack in the early hours of July 22.

The man entered the mosque at around 5:30 a.m., allegedly with a concealed folding knife, claiming he was there to pray. Once inside, he lunged at Mansoor Mahmood.

In a statement, a spokesman for Al-Karam Mosque said: “Our imam showed remarkable courage and defended himself until the police arrived and arrested the attacker.

“We are deeply grateful that our Imam survived this horrific incident and we commend the police for their swift response.

“We call on our community to support and adhere to the enhanced security measures, including the regulated opening and closing of the mosque during prayer times.”

Plaistow councillor John Morris said: “I am deeply shocked by this appalling attack on one of our religious communities.

“My thoughts are with the courageous Imam and the community of Al-Karam Mosque.”

Chief Inspector Sarah Jackson, who leads police teams in Newham’s boroughs, said local religious representatives had been dispatched to the mosque. “I know this is an alarming incident,” she said. “We are treating it with the utmost seriousness.”

“Local religious representatives have visited the mosque to meet those directly affected. We are in contact with other partners to provide more comprehensive reassurance.

“Officers also maintain a visible presence at the mosque during Friday prayers and I would encourage anyone who has concerns to speak to them.”

“Police were called at around 5.30am on Monday 22 July following reports that a man had been attacked at a mosque in Katherine Road, E7. The man was taken to hospital for treatment and has since been discharged.

“This matter is not being treated as a hate crime, but as an isolated incident.”

Motin Jaman, 32, has been charged with possession of an offensive weapon and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. He is due to appear at Thames Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.
