Delta Airlines faces investigations over flight delays and cancellations

NEW YORK (PIX11) – Delta passengers continue to face massive cancellations and flight delays following the global Microsoft outage on Friday.

Federal officials said an investigation into the Atlanta-based airline is underway. As of Tuesday, passengers were still unable to return home or take their dream vacation.

Delta’s CEO said the problem would be resolved in a few days.

Carlos and his family left LaGuardia Airport on foot on Tuesday evening instead of flying back to Atlanta as planned.

“It was postponed three times and finally canceled,” he said.

You’re among Delta customers experiencing a travel nightmare. The airline has canceled or delayed hundreds of flights after the CrowdStrike software update crashed Windows systems for the fifth day in a row.

“They booked us a flight to Chicago tomorrow and from there to Atlanta,” Carlos added.

While most airlines affected by the software glitch have resumed normal operations by the end of the weekend, Delta is struggling with problems with the crew tracking system needed to staff flights.

Diane and her family were returning to New York from Orlando, Florida. She said they didn’t want to end their vacation waiting more than five hours at the airport.

“It’s just difficult when you have a small child because we were at the airport three hours before check-in,” said Diane.

According to FlightAware, at least 62 flights were canceled and 141 flights were delayed at the three major airports in the New York area on Tuesday evening.

The US Department of Transportation has launched an investigation into Delta Airlines. Secretary Pete Buttigieg said the investigation specifically focused on the company’s collapse in operations and customer service.

“I hear a lot of things. I’m very concerned about people being on hold for hours to get a new flight, people having to sleep on the floor of airports, and even unaccompanied minors being stuck in airports and unable to get a flight,” Buttigieg said.

Delta Airlines told PIX11 News that the company is fully cooperating with the investigation and will cover legitimate costs resulting from flight disruptions.
