There is still a risk of rain and storms at the end of the week

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – Daily rain and storm chances will persist through the end of the week, over the weekend and even into early next week. With the chance of isolated rain and storms remaining elevated, about 50-60%, the humidity factor will be noticeable and afternoon highs will remain in the 30s to 35s.

Today it will be cloudy, but some sunshine is also expected. Humidity is high. The wind is coming from the southeast at around 8 km/h and at times reaches gale-like gusts.

During the afternoon, isolated showers and thunderstorms are possible, lasting until the early evening hours. Maximum temperatures will reach 30 to 35 degrees Celsius. Clouds will remain overnight, minimum temperatures will be 25 to 35 degrees Celsius and there will be light to gentle winds.

The reason for the increased rain and storm chances is a blocked boundary. Normally in the summer we have a 20% chance of one rain shower or storm per day… but thanks to this boundary and the pulses of energy moving towards us, that chance of rain is increasing to 50-60% each day.

With the increased chance of rain comes increased humidity, meaning that sticky, icky feeling in the air will be felt in full force whether it rains in your area or not.

As is typical for summer, some places experience heavy rain, lightning, thunder and gusty winds, while other areas are just warm and humid with lots of clouds.

Model data is trying to dry out some areas a bit on Thursday and Friday as a weak high pressure tries to form…but with humidity levels still high, there is an above normal chance of rain. If there is indeed a slightly drier period, temperatures could climb a bit more towards the end of the week. Just a FIRST WARNING of something we will be watching closely over the next day.

The upper air pressure that supports daily rain and storms will retreat northward this weekend, and a ridge of high pressure will begin to build in the Gulf of Mexico. This, in turn, will cause the chance of rain and storms to become a little more isolated and scattered.

Despite this ever so slight change in the weather pattern… Due to high humidity levels across the region, our rain and storm chances for next week remain elevated compared to late July standards. Highs will be in the 30s to 35s Celsius each afternoon, and that pesky humidity will make it very muggy outside.
