The incident occurred shortly after 8:30 p.m. The firefighter was immediately transported for treatment and has since been released to recover. This is the second time in the past month that a firefighter from the district has been struck by a vehicle.

“We are actively searching for the driver of this vehicle as he fled the scene of the accident,” the release states. The vehicle is described as a 1990s GMC Sierra 1500 Stepside. Anyone with information is asked to contact Smith County Emergency Services District 2 at (903) 617-6578.

The press release stressed drivers’ attention: “Drivers – you MUST pay attention. Our firefighters have wives, children and families of their own. This cannot happen.”
