Sacramento police investigate man’s death in custody

Sacramento police are investigating the death of a man who was in police custody Tuesday, officials said. Police said officers initially went to Jasmine Street near South Avenue around 4:30 p.m. to check on the man’s welfare. Family members called for a man in his 50s who was threatening to hurt himself and may have been under the influence of drugs, officials said. Police said officers found the man in the street with a knife. He then threw the knife into the street and barricaded himself in a vehicle. Officials did not specify whether or not the vehicle belonged to the man. Officers were able to pull him from the vehicle without using force, officials said. While the man was restrained in the back seat of a police vehicle, he was unresponsive, police said. Firefighters attempted to resuscitate the man, but he later died at an area hospital. Police said officers found the man in the street with a knife. He then threw the knife into the street and barricaded himself in a vehicle. Officers did not specify whether the vehicle belonged to the man or not.

The officers managed to get him out of the vehicle without using force.

The man was unresponsive while being restrained in the back seat of a police vehicle, police said. Firefighters attempted to resuscitate the man, but he later died at a nearby hospital.
