Officials say NYC police are helping track down a suspect in DC

New York Police Department officers arriving in Washington on Tuesday to bolster security at the Capitol noticed a police incident in the northeastern United States and engaged in a foot chase, officials said.

“The NYPD will always support our brothers and sisters in law enforcement,” a New York City police officer said on social media, describing the chase in the 1500 block of Benning Road NE.

On their way to assist Capitol Police during this week’s events, New York police officers “engaged in a foot chase and assisted in the arrest” of a person who fled after a traffic stop, according to an NYPD officer.

The New York Police Department “is always on duty and constantly working to ensure the safety of New Yorkers and, in this case, the citizens of Washington, DC,” wrote Kaz Daughtry, deputy chief of operations for the New York department.

In the incident on Tuesday morning, police officers in Washington, DC, stopped a vehicle near the Starburst intersection in the northeast as part of a car theft investigation, said Tom Lynch, a spokesman for the Washington DC Police Department.

Two people ran out of the vehicle and New York police officers, who apparently arrived by bus, saw what happened, Lynch said.

The New York police officers helped us track down the two, said the spokesman from Washington DC

Two people were taken into custody for unauthorized use of a car, Lynch said.

“We thank our friends at the NYPD for their support,” he said.

The intersection where the incident occurred is on a direct route between New York City and the Capitol. Maryland Avenue intersects Bladensburg Road there.

More than 200 NYPD officers are in the District and have been sworn in as special officers of the U.S. Capitol Police to assist with policing at the Capitol this week, NYPD Deputy Commissioner Daughtry said Tuesday afternoon.

He said his ministry would always respond to calls for help to ensure public safety “and protect democracy.”

Thousands of protesters are expected at the Capitol on Wednesday when Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addresses a joint session of Congress.

Capitol Police arrested about 200 people on Tuesday who were protesting against US arms sales to Israel in the rotunda of the Cannon House Office Building.
