Man charged with raping woman on false promise of marriage in Mumbai: Police

Mumbai:

A 36-year-old man has been accused of raping a Mumbai woman under the pretext of a fake marriage in Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra, police said on Tuesday.

Two women were also reported to police in the case for allegedly insulting and threatening the victim over the phone and urging her not to marry the accused, an official said.

The incident came to light when the 25-year-old victim approached Chiplun police station with a complaint against the accused, who allegedly raped her on false promises of marriage, he said.

The case was transferred to the Nehru Nagar police station in central Mumbai without any charges, he said.

According to the plaintiff, in 2022 she came into contact with the defendant Aditya Parab through a mutual friend of her father, who was looking for a groom for his daughter.

After meetings between both families, the victim decided to marry Parab, who worked for a private company in Brazil and returned home in August 2023, the official said.

After they returned home, talks about their marriage started again, but he avoided giving any commitment to the victim and her family members, citing various reasons, he said.

When the victim was staying at the accused’s residence, he had a physical relationship with her on July 5. The next day, both of them went to Guhagar in Ratnagiri district, where they stayed at a resort and became intimate again, the official said.

However, when the accused returned to Mumbai, he started avoiding her. He also tried to postpone the wedding, citing his education and the burden of a loan as reasons, he said.

When the victim realized she had been cheated, she contacted the police and filed a rape complaint against the man, the officer said.
