Summer in the Empire State is a great time. Buffalo and Western New York are really vibrant places when the weather warms up. There are plenty of things to do throughout the region; it’s also a great place to do absolutely nothing, especially given New York’s unique position on and near the water.

From salt water from the ocean to fresh water from the Great Lakes, you can find just about anything you need in the Empire State.

That’s why Buffalo is often one of the best places to stay in the state because of our proximity to two major lakes, as well as several other large inland lakes. But where can you go if you want to be near the water?

Chautauqua Lake

This 17-mile lake in Chautauqua County is a treasure of Western New York. Located just 1 hour from Buffalo, it is one of the best places for a day trip. Chautauqua Lake is very popular for boating and other water activities.

Lake Ontario

Lake Ontario, the smallest of the five Great Lakes, is the last body of water before you head down the St. Lawrence Seaway to the Atlantic Ocean. The lake has several spots along its shores that give you great access to the water, including a fan favorite, Fort Niagara.

Lake Erie

Located directly on the city’s shores, Lake Erie is home to several interesting attractions in Buffalo. There is direct access to the lake at Canalside, as well as almost every beach south of Niagara Falls.

Hoyt Lake

It’s a true hidden gem in the middle of the city. Hoyt Lakes is located in what many consider to be the largest park in New York State, Delaware Park. With an average depth of just 5 feet, Hoyt Lake has a lot to offer, like flamingo paddle boats.
