Video shows Terrell Davis being escorted back from a United flight in handcuffs

Attorneys for former Denver Broncos running back Terrell Davis released a video on Tuesday of an incident on a United Airlines flight in which the two-time Super Bowl winner was led off the plane in handcuffs.

The video, apparently shot by a bystander, shows police officers handcuffing the Pro Football Hall of Fame member at the end of a United Airlines flight from Denver to Orange County, California, earlier this month.

Davis was out with his family when his son asked for a cup of ice cream from the drink service, according to an Instagram post Davis wrote after the incident.

“I calmly reached behind me and lightly tapped (a flight attendant’s) arm to get his attention and again ask him for a cup of ice cream for my son,” Davis wrote. “He yelled, ‘Don’t hit me,’ and exited the cart, hastily approaching the front of the plane.”

Davis was escorted off the plane at John Wayne Airport by agents from several law enforcement agencies, including the FBI. According to the Instagram post, agents apologized to Davis after questioning him.

“FBI agents and law enforcement partners at John Wayne Airport in Orange County responded to a report of an incident onboard a flight that required further investigation,” FBI and John Wayne Airport officials said in a statement to USA TODAY Sports last week. “One individual was detained for questioning, cooperated with law enforcement and was released to continue their travel.”

The FBI and the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, which provides police services at the airport, did not respond to a request for comment Tuesday.

Davis’ lawyers promise lawsuit

In the Instagram post, Davis called for a “thorough and proper investigation of the flight attendant.”

The company issued a statement last week saying it had reached out to Davis’ team to apologize and had relieved the flight attendant of duty pending a review of the incident. Airline officials said Tuesday the company had “nothing new to share.”

Parker Stinar, managing partner of the law firm representing Davis, said in a statement accompanying the video that the firm would file suit against the airline.

“This video confirms the harrowing story of how multiple law enforcement officers, including the FBI, boarded the aircraft and detained a shocked, frightened, humiliated and compliant Mr. Davis in front of his wife, Tamiko, his minor children and more than a hundred passengers,” the statement said. “Only through a trial can we uncover the truth and hold United Airlines accountable for the systemic failings that led to this traumatic incident.”
