Litter of dead puppies found on golf course in Caln Township, Pennsylvania

A litter of dead puppies was found on a golf course in Pennsylvania, with no clues as to how they ended up there.

Seven puppies from the same litter, estimated to be four to six weeks old, were discovered by a golf club employee at Ingleside Golf Course in Caln Township, Pennsylvania, Caln Township Police Chief Joseph G. Elias told USA TODAY on Tuesday.

“This was a very disturbing discovery,” Elias said, adding that the puppies were found in the part of the golf course farthest from the clubhouse. “The person or persons who placed them there made no attempt to hide them.”

Elias said the puppies were found by an employee around noon on Monday and were likely placed there 12 to 18 hours before they were found.

The cause of death has not yet been determined, but the puppies “were exposed to the elements and scavengers before they were found,” Elias said, adding, “Initial findings suggest the puppies were killed and then abandoned at the location where they were discovered.”

“This is such a sad situation, these young souls deserve a better life,” said Sara Smith, a spokeswoman for the Brandywine Valley SPCA animal welfare organization, on Tuesday.

The spokesperson said the organization has resources in place to prevent such consequences, such as free pet food, low-cost or subsidized veterinary care, vaccinations and spay/neuter counseling, and encouraged pet owners to take advantage of them.

“There are options and we want people to know they can come to us,” Smith said.

Active criminal investigations are underway

Elias said a criminal investigation into the incident is currently underway and that the Brandywine Valley SPCA is assisting them in the investigation and trying to find out who might be behind it.

“We hope that someone from the public will come forward with information that can help us identify the motive and the person or persons responsible for this heinous act,” Elias said.

Police have asked anyone with information about the incident to either call the SPCA tip line at 484-302-0018 or submit tips anonymously online using the tip form.

The Ingleside Golf Club, meanwhile, will donate $5 from every green fee to the Brandywine Valley SPCA from July 25-28 to support animal abuse prevention, Elias said.
