ATP Roundup: Seeds start to fall in Atlanta

Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic, seeded No. 6, and Brandon Nakashima, seeded No. 7, were eliminated from the first round of the Atlanta Open on Tuesday.

Australia’s Adam Walton saved all three break points he faced and beat Kecmanovic 6-4, 6-4. Mackenzie McDonald needed just 72 minutes to win her all-American match against Nakashima 6-2, 6-4. McDonald went 3 for 3 both saving break points and converting her break point opportunities.

Frenchman Harold Mayot was also the big loser of the competition, beating Croatian Borna Coric 7-6 (9), 6-3. Other winners included Italian qualifier Mattia Bellucci, Russian Aslan Karatsev and Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech.

Three matches were on the evening’s schedule, including one between Australians Christopher O’Connell and Max Purcell, seeded number 8.

General opening

Wild card Lukas Neumayer eliminated his compatriot and No. 5 seed Sebastian Ofner 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (3) in front of his home crowd in Kitzbühel, Austria.

Neumayer, ranked 289th in the world to Ofner’s 56th, had to endure 10 aces from Ofner and won despite five double faults without an ace. He won five of the last six points in the third-set tiebreak.

Spain’s Roberto Carballes Baena, seeded No. 7, beat Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. Argentina’s Thiago Agustin Tirante beat Austria’s Dominic Thiem 6-2, 6-4. Other winners included Italy’s Matteo Berrettini, Argentina’s Facundo Diaz Acosta, Colombia’s Daniel Elahi Galan and France’s Hugo Gaston.

Top seed Andrey Rublev of Russia beat Argentina’s Camilo Ugo Carabelli 6-4, 7-5 to reach the quarter-finals in Umag.

Ugo Carabelli hit six aces to Rublev’s one but also committed six double faults. Rublev hit 22 winners while overcoming 18 unforced errors.

Rublev will face Hungarian Fabian Marozsan in the quarter-finals, who defeated Brazilian Thiago Monteiro 6-2, 7-6 (7). And in two matches in the round of 16, Italian Luciano Darderi, seeded number 5, beat Croatian Duje Ajdukovic 6-1, 6-4, while Italian Fabio Fognini beat Frenchman Luca Van Assche 6-4, 6-3.
