CALN – “It’s a horrible situation for these puppies that just deserve to live. These are souls that deserve to live,” said Sara Smith, senior director of marketing and communications for the Brandywine Valley SPCA.

A litter of seven pit bull terrier mix puppies were found dead by a golf course employee about 120 yards off the Route 30 bypass at Ingleside Golf Club on Monday.

Caln Police and the SPCA have launched an investigation into the deaths of the 6- to 8-week-old puppies. Police Chief Joe Elias called the situation “heartbreaking.”

One poster on Caln Township’s Facebook page wrote, “How sad oh my god I would have taken one this breaks my heart,” while another post read, “God how cruel.”

Elias said there were no visible external signs of abuse. He also said police conducted a grid search of the golf course area.

The chief hopes that someone from a nearby house has seen or heard something, but hopes even more that someone in the community knows about the puppies.

“If your neighbor had a pregnant pit bull and you see the dog but not the puppies,” then file a report, the police chief said. “That attracts a lot of attention – and rightly so.”

Smith said the SPCA offers several resources to the community.

There is advice on new placement, low-cost or subsidized castration and sterilization, and free animal feed.

“We are here for them … and to help people who are in a situation themselves and need help,” Smith said.

Elias said the puppy’s former owner would likely face at least one charge of animal cruelty, but that would require consultation with the district attorney.

Ingleside Golf Club will donate $5 from all green fees to the Brandywine Valley SPCA from July 25-28 to support animal abuse prevention.
