Three days can make a big difference. On Sunday morning, Democrats were wallowing in despair as their elderly presidential candidate was isolated from the outside world because of Covid and more and more members of the party called for his resignation.

Now the Democrats have a new likely candidate in Kamala Harris, and the enthusiasm at her campaign rally in Milwaukee, Wisconsin was palpable.

For the first time since Biden’s disastrous debate with Donald Trump in late June, Democrats seemed hopeful – even excited – about the upcoming election campaign.

Harris’s run for the White House is just beginning, and her challenge will be to maintain that enthusiasm and translate it into increased voter turnout when the election begins in a few months.

In doing so, she must face the devastating attacks from Trump and the Republicans that have only just begun.
