How to watch: Atlanta United takes on Charlotte Independence in the US Open Cup

On Tuesday, Atlanta United will face USL League One club Charlotte Independence in the round of 16 for the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. The 7:30 p.m. match will be the first time the two clubs will face each other.

The Lamar Hunt US Open Cup is a single-elimination competition that brings together various teams from American soccer leagues. It is the oldest national football competition in the United States. Atlanta United won the competition in 2019. After two years without competition due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Atlanta United entered the 2022 tournament as the defending champions. They faced MLS club Nashville SC in the round of 16 but were eliminated.

Charlotte plays in USL League One and joined the league in 2014. They currently have a 2-1-1 record in USL League One. Their last match was on Friday where they came away with a 3-1 victory against Fuego FC. The Jacks were able to reach the round of 16 after defeating Rhode Island FC in a dramatic penalty shootout. Reaching this point is the furthest the Jacks have advanced in the U.S. Cup since 2015. This will be the third time they have faced an MLS team for the Open Cup; the other two times came in 2015 against New England Revolution (round of 16) and Chicago Fire FC (round of 16).
