Buffalo Bills have team in top 10 of ESPN NFL rankings for 2024

The Buffalo Bills suffered some attrition this offseason, but they still have a top-10 team in the NFL, according to ESPN’s rankings.

His NFL analysts ranked all 32 NFL rosters heading into training camp and broke down the strongest and weakest positional units, as well as an X-factor to watch.

Buffalo has the ninth-best team on the list. The top three teams are the San Francisco 49ers, Kansas City Chiefs and Baltimore Ravens. The New York Jets (No. 4) have the best team in the AFC East, ESPN said.

In a separate anonymous poll of NFL executives, scouts and coaches, Josh Allen was ranked the league’s third-best quarterback, behind Patrick Mahomes and Joe Burrow.

Here’s ESPN’s analysis of the Bills:

Greatest strength: Quarterback. Josh Allen hasn’t finished lower than sixth in QBR in each of the last four seasons (third or better in three of those seasons, including 2023). He’s also finished in the top 10 in dropbacks, attempts, completions, passing yards, passing TDs, carries, rushing yards and rushing TDs in those four campaigns. The departure of WR Stefon Diggs will put more weight on Allen’s shoulders, but the 28-year-old has shown he can carry the load. — Mike Clay

Biggest weakness: Wide receiver. I wrote about the Bills’ WR depth issues in this section last year, and the team has since said goodbye to starters Diggs and Gabe Davis. Buffalo has potential reinforcements in place, but the group has a lot to prove. That list starts with second-round pick Keon Coleman, who may need time to develop given his age (he turned 21 in May). Veteran Curtis Samuel has settled in as the No. 3 short-range receiver in recent years, while third-year Khalil Shakir is an intriguing wild-card/breakout candidate after a strong finish to 2023. Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Mack Hollins and Chase Claypool are also among those battling for work. — Mike Clay

X Factor for 2024: Receiver Keon Coleman. He’s especially important for all the reasons Mike listed in the previous section. It would be incredibly difficult for the Bills to find offensive success without one of those receivers — most likely Coleman or Shakir — stepping up. Otherwise, Buffalo will have a tough ceiling to crack. — Seth Walder

Non-starter to know: Cornerback Kaiir Elam. The Bills played base defense 3 percent of the time last season, so cornerback depth is very important to them. Former first-round pick Elam is the first guy to step up if a starter gets hurt, but he had a 21 percent success rate in pass coverage last season and 31 percent the year before. He’ll have to do better if he’s forced to play this season. — Aaron Schatz
